Lithonia Lighting...This Isn't Your Grandfathers Warehouse Lighting
Warehouse Lighting...You've come a long way baby. From Sodium to Metal Halide to Fluorescent. Over the years, industrial lighting has made some great advancements.
Sodium Lighting is an older lighting technology and its illumination can be considered more yellow than white. Sodium lighting gives the appearance of less light when compared to halide or fluorescent lights.
Metal Halide lighting is also considered "Old School" but is still the preferred choice in demanding environments where dirt, vibration and high temperatures are imminent. Metal Halide lamps offer high intensity pure white light but also offer less energy efficiency than fluorescent lights.
The biggest trend today in warehouse lighting is the retrofit of existing Metal Halide lights to T5HO or T8 fluorescent high bay lighting. By going to fluorescent you can achieve more than you can ever imagine.
- You can save ~50% energy costs by replacing a 400W M.H. with either a 6-lamp T8 or 4-lamp T5HO fluorescent high bay.
- You can control the fixtures with a Motion Sensor to turn them on/off when not in use for additional energy savings
- The fluorescent lamps last ~75% longer than the M.H. lamps
- Over its life, the fluorescent maintains 90+% of light output compared to <65% with M.H.
- Color rendering and consistency is much improved with fluorescent.
T8 high bay lighting is a less expensive option than T5HO high bay lighting. T8 Lighting is recommended in 15'-30' mounting heights. T8 high bay lighting is recommended for temperature-controlled warehouses. It's a credible solution for non-demanding environments.
T5HO lighting is great for warehouses and manufacturing, and is recommended for mounting heights from 20' – 50'. The T5HO system is more expensive than its T8 counterpart but offers higher levels of light and greater fixture efficiency. The multiple lamp configurations allow for great flexibility.
There are now energy-saving T5HO lamps available from all major lamp manufacturers, and also Amalgam lamps which allow for higher lumens in high temp applications. Even without the Amalgam lamps, T5HO lighting can provide very high levels of light and effectively perform in higher temperatures. Lithonia Lighting's I-BEAM® fixture features "Cool Running™ Technology" and is UL-Listed to 65 degree Celsius (149 degree Fahrenheit).
LED (Light Emitting Diode) Lighting is becoming the really "Big Thing". Some people think it is the future of industrial warehouse lighting but the LED technology for high bay warehouses is still a ways off. As LED's progress, so do fluorescent high bays. The lumens per watt and dollars per lumen still favor fluorescent over both HID and LED. In other words, LED lighting technology for high bay lighting will not be mainstream for at least several more years.
